The Tragic Change Only 12 Months Has Made in America
Twelve months back, the landscape was utterly separate. Before the American presidential vote, reflective Americans could recognize America's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – however they continued to identify it as the United States. A democracy. A country where the rule of law carried weight. A nation headed by a dignified and ethical official, despite his advanced age and increasing frailty.
Currently, this autumn, numerous citizens hardly identify the country we inhabit. Individuals alleged as illegal immigrants are detained and pushed into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for a grotesque dance hall. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or supposed enemies and requesting the justice department hand over a huge total of public funds. Armed military personnel are being sent into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively freed itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Colleges, attorney offices, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are handled as nobility.
“The US, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in this country.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. It is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we are, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.
Yet, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling initial presidency and even after the cautions linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – following Trump himself declared plainly he planned to be a dictator only on the first day – a majority of citizens selected him over his Democratic opponent.
As terrifying as today's circumstances may be, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this administration. How will another 36 months of this deterioration position us? And what if the three years transforms into something even longer, as there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is essential, maybe for defense purposes?
Admittedly, all is not lost. We will have legislative votes in 2026 which might establish an alternate governmental control, in case Democrats recapture one or both houses of parliament. There are public servants who are attempting to impose some accountability, like Democratic congressmen currently starting a probe concerning the try to money grab from legal authorities.
And a leadership election three years from now could start the path to recovery exactly as last year’s election set us on this regrettable path.
There are millions of Americans demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.
A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of America is stirring”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Watergate scandal.
In those instances, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.
He claims he understands the indicators of that revival and notices it unfolding at present. For proof, he cites the widespread marches, the broad, multi-faction opposition against a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they only publish approved content.
“The dormant force consistently stays asleep before specific greed turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so loud, that the giant is forced but to awaken.”
It's a positive outlook, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will be validated.
At the same time, the major inquiries endure: is the US able to regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its position globally and its devotion to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything might be lost. My positive feelings, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more fully, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it may be participating in political races, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to safeguard voting rights.
Not even one year prior, we lived in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or three years from now? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is to attempt to not give up.
